Overview of SK8

The SK8 Environment
SK8 is an object-oriented authoring environment developed in Apple's Research Laboratories since 1990. SK8 is NOT an Apple Product. SK8 is designed for rapid development of customizable and extensible media authoring tools and titles. SK8 features:

  • A prototype-instance, fully dynamic object system
  • An English-like scripting language supporting complex operations on collections
  • A general graphics and event system based on containment and on Renderer objects
  • A rich object framework with support for multimedia and for tool building
  • A feature-rich, direct manipulation development environment

The scripting language, graphics system, application framework, user interface, and various editors are explained in the architecture and editor sections. SK8 technology has been seeded to over one hundred sites for evaluation and prototyping purposes and has been iteratively designed and developed over the past seven years.

The Benefits of SK8
SK8 is designed to:

  • Reduce the time to build multimedia titles
  • Reduce the time to build derivative tools
  • Provide a rapid prototyping environment for the development of applications, tools and titles

Current SK8 developers have created projects in a matter of hours which would have taken days or months using other authoring tools. SK8 can be used to create tools designed to address specific needs. For example, media producers could create projects with time-based, event-driven and interactive book/movie sections thus adding depth and richness not available in today's authoring tools.
